Description
🎥 WHAT DOES A MEDIA SAFETY BACKWATCHER DO?
A Media Safety BackWatcher works alongside journalists, camera operators, producers and presenters, helping them manage the risks involved in gathering and broadcasting news.
While the crew concentrates on reporting, filming or delivering a live broadcast, the BackWatcher maintains awareness of the surrounding environment and provides timely, practical safety advice.
Their key responsibilities include:
✅ Preparation and risk assessment — understanding the assignment, researching the location, identifying potential threats and agreeing communication and emergency arrangements.
✅ Situational awareness — monitoring crowd behaviour, emerging tensions, approaches to the crew and changes that could affect the team’s safety.
✅ Managing filming and live-broadcast positions — assessing the working area, maintaining awareness around equipment and identifying suitable routes away from the location.
✅ Conflict management — communicating professionally, recognising hostility early and using de-escalation skills to reduce confrontation.
✅ Movement and withdrawal planning — helping the crew move safely and advising when conditions require them to reposition, pause or leave.
✅ Communication and accountability — keeping the team informed, maintaining agreed contact with the newsroom and ensuring everyone is accounted for.
✅ Incident support — following emergency plans, requesting appropriate assistance and providing support within their training and competence.
Understanding how a news team works is central to the role. An effective BackWatcher supports the editorial task with calm judgement, discretion and clear communication.
At Cosain, our training draws on operational experience to prepare advisers for these responsibilities.
